This pages provides links to the pages of people who published their .emacs on the web. Most of these links give you more concerning Emacs than only a .emacs.

Although I try to check the links regulary, they might be invalid. If you find a broken link on this page, please send me a short mail.

Notes from the author:
This document contains Unix Emacs elisp information: links to some papers, ftp site download information, notes about Emacs debugging, useful package pointers and installation tips.

I didn't link the configuration files section directly, because this would throw away the navigation frame. I'm sure you'll find the files :).
Take a look at the whole page, it's worth it !

Jari has concentrated all his Emacs related pages like:
Jari Aaltos tiny tools page and

As you can see this is a Emacs setup for linux (and X11). Neverthless (having taken a first look) this might be interesting for all other flavours of emacs. The configuration is split into pieces and all the companion files are provided.
You should get the whole thing:

Notes from the author:
The Emacs setup has a nice feature that resembles the SELECT key on a Symbolics Lisp machine. It is used to switch to other buffers in the most comfortable way, especially when programming . It also has example tuning for C-mode, including a minor mode to be compatible with FreeBSD's style(9), a compilation command that automatically detects whether (BSD) make or gmake must be called and generally some nice Elisp functions I missed.

Notes from the author:
Customizing Emacs is a sport pursued world-wide, at least. The key to it is the .emacs file, which resides in the user's home directory. I (ab)use three operating systems, Windows 95, Windows NT and Red Hat Linux 5.0. I have also used HP-UX. I run (or, in the case of HP-UX, ran) Emacs on all of them. I share(d) the same .emacs file among all three of my current OSs. In the case of NT and W95, I set $HOME to the same directory for both. For Linux, I copy in to root and my own user directory.

I am posting my .emacs file here because I hope it will be of use as an example. I would also welcome feedback if you see something I can do better. I hope the comments are clear enough.

Any .emacs file is a work in progress, so things in here may or may not work.

This is my .emacs file as of July 1999. Maybe you'll find parts of it useful. A lot of it is just accumulated cruft though.
Author:
Jake Donham
The url:
Jake Donham's .emacs
Notes:
This is no cut and paste the whole thing .emacs, Jake has diveded it into sections with statements what they are good for. The dotfiles handles and extends the usual things like email, gnus and the setup of some modes. What makes it really interisting is a section about loading java class files, automagically decompile them via mocha and load the result into a buffer. Should be changeable to other decompilers.

Notes from the author:
This file serves as a site-start.el Emacs configuration and although all OS/2 specific stuff is marked so, it may be that not everything herein will fit into the .emacs file in a multiuser environment, i.e. you will be *probably* not allowed to do all the things described here, if you are not a superuser on your machine.

Oliver has updated to Jeremy Bowens Emacs 20.6 port for OS/2 and has setup some pages about how to configure emacs 20.6 under OS/2
As a tribute to my first contact (the port of Emacs to OS/2 done by Eberhard Mattes) I decided to mirror the OS/2 port of GNU Emacs. You'll find all the files Oliver mentioned and a zip containing all the files plus his configuration pages.

This is a .emacs for the French speaking users, most of the comments are in French. Soliman has a page (also in French language) where you can find some of his other dotfiles.
The gnus configuration is a plain text (no html) file, if it is messed up in your browser, simply load it into your Emacs and it will look fine.

Notes from the author:
Emacs is my preferred work environment. I basically live in it, I start Emacs when I log in, I quit Emacs when I log out. I use both GNU Emacs and XEmacs, and my .emacs is capable of handling both, trying to hide the differences among them (when possible). I read my mail with VM, and so a significant part of .emacs deals with that.

Just a my little .emacs, it's intended to work and look good on win, X11, msdos and on a Linux console. Mostly intended for use as a C/C++ / x86 programing IDE. No font locking used, just yellow text on blue background.

Notes from the author:
I'm using GNU Emacs 19.34.6 under Windows 95 for source code creation all the time. Currently, I'm using the standard java mode which is part of the cc-mode.el package (maybe JDE would be a better alternative, but I did not really try yet). I added a couple of customizations to support more intuitive key bindings and to allow for proper syntax highlighting with Java files.

site-lisp_1.0-5_all.deb is the debian package I use to install a pre-configured Emacs site-lisp for linux boxes. There are a few settings for european/french users but not so much. Any feedback welcome.
site-lisp_2.0.13_all.deb is compatible with the new layout of Emacs lisp packages of the hamm release of the debian system (it works with the slink and potato releases too).
For those without the debian packager, site-lisp_1.0-5.tar.gz or site-lisp_2.0.13.tar.gz are the source packages.

This is Will Mengarini's .emacs, renamed to dotemacs.el so it can be loaded under Unix from .emacs or under DOS from _emacs. On Su 10 Aug 97 this file had 2001 lines; on Sa 24 Apr 99, 6666. Record length: 7,195 lines on Su 12 Sep 99.

Don't mess with me: (apply '+ (mapcar 'identity "MENGARINI"))

This file is *big*.

This one is really big: 305.594 bytes !!
It's the biggest .emacs I've ever seen and I wonder how long it lasts until it is loaded, but it is very well documented and consists of a lot of things which might be useful for you.
Beside this monster .emacs, Will has a homepage with some elisp packages: Will Mengarini's home page.

Holger has an Emacs page available in Enlish at Holger's Resources : Emacs. There you can find some elisp packages written by him.
The configuration page is only available in German language, nevertheless it's useful, because the configuration files are mostly in English and Holger has split up his configuration in various files for the different bigger packages.

Notes from the author:
This page is the ideal read if you worked your way through the Emacs tutorial, used Emacs for a few days, and now you think the time has come to do some customizing. Beware, however: Some of the things presented on this page can also be achieved by using Customize. Check it out by choosing the menu Help / Customize / Top-level Customization Group. Customize is for the users that don't want to learn elisp. There are some exceptions to this rule, but if you would like to learn elisp, there is no better way to start than by editing your own .emacs file without the aid of Customize.

Yes, I belong to the cult of Emacs. If you don't know what Emacs is, it's the text editor to end all text editors, and both a powerful time-saver and terrible time-waster. If you do know what it is but don't use it, then you're missing out... but that's a Holy War, and I haven't finished with my Emacs Inquisition material yet. If you know and use Emacs, then you may find some code here to be of interest.
